Baby it's cold outside.

It's hard to say what conditions the trails are in. Half the people are whining the other half are quite happy. I just goes to show you that you can please some of the people some of the time.

It has been really cold for a day or two. It is almost up to minus 15 so far today. I don't think it went up past minus 20 yesterday. With all the mild weather the snow got packed down nicely now the cold weather is tightening everything up.

We have not had much snow to speak of but there has been no rain. So all is still good. There are alot of sleds around this week so things can't be too bad.

The groomers have been out off and on. Maybe more off than on. A group went out this morning to brush the trails. There are a number of trees down and the branches are so laden with snow and ice some trails are difficult to travel. I have never seen the snow stay on the trees for so long. It's been about five days. It looks beautiful especially with the moon so full last night. It is like daylight all night long.

Kudos to Jim and Brian again for helping out to clear off the ice build up from the Internet satellite dish this time. It was so ice covered I could not access the Internet. There such good boys. Connie should be proud of her two hubbies!!!! Honest Connie they are being good and I bet they will even have the cottage cleaned up by Thursday. hehehe

It is really nice to see the same people back for another year of sledding.

The general store in Lake St. Peter continues to run out of gas on a regular basis. Therefore I have stocked up on Premium gas in cans so if you are caught short stop by and we will help you out.

If you are feeling really sporty I am helping organize a Snow Shoe Baseball Tournament on February 13. Get your summer ball team together or just round up a bunch of friends. It is at the ANAF in Maynooth. Just one day but lots of fun. Hope you can join us.

Well that's it for now. Back when something exciting happens.

Cheers

Do you reply to chain letters?

Well now that all the hoopla is over and we are all eating cold turkey sandwiches, hot turkey sandwiches, turkey milkshakes and turkey pot pies lets reflect on last year.

I have had an extreme string of bad luck this summer and fall ending with my Christmas gift from Canadian Tire on December 24 of a $2,000.00 repair to my little car. I am beginning to think that it may have had something to do with all of the chain letters my e-mail friends keep sending to me advising that I will have extreme bad luck if I don't forward it on in the next 10 minutes. Well I don't even open them any more just to see how bad my luck will be, I just delete without opening. I don't have the heart to send them on. Is anyone else in this same situation? If so I may never use e-mail again.

Okay now that I have had my wine, oh no that is whine for the day I can get on with my reason for doing this.

Boxing Day was pretty quiet around here this year. Not at all like last year. Snow conditions remain good. There was a little freezing rain in the morning then snow off and on all day. Enough that I had to have the lot plowed this morning to clean it up. The weather is great today. I haven't had to put a coat on all day running in and out. The sun has just come out for the first time.

Riders in today say the the trails are in good shape and riding is fine. We didn't get the rain that hit down south so no snow was lost. Nothing was groomed over the last few days but I'm sure they will start soon. I'll update as soon as I here something.

Here is a shout out to the couple that rode over from Wilberforce. The man helped me clean off the satellite dish so that some guests could watch the Juniors game on Boxing Day. Thanks a bunch for your help.

Well nothing new to add. A happy new year to all. I hope we see you over the next few days.

Cheers

Twas the night before Christmas

Well here it is Christmas Eve already (almost). I left the wilds of Lake St. Peter on Tuesday for the bright lights of Bowmanville then Oshawa.

It was a very busy sledding weekend this past weekend. All trails were in good shape and riders were quite pleased with the conditions. The groomers have been out regularly keeping things good. Lake St. Peter has frozen over because of the cold temperatures this week. If it stays this cold it well be travelable by the weekend. I have not talked to anyone that has been on it other than just a quick walk out. Mink has also frozen but is not ready for travel yet.

A little more snow would be great. But we will take what we have. More snow should be coming on the 25th & 26th. We will see.

Things are pretty quiet otherwise. Mostly the coffee crowd visiting which is nice also.

I will be back home on the 24th but I may not get updated then. I will do it by the 26th for sure. My wireless Internet will not reach over to the house from the restaurant.

Have a great holiday and I hope you get a chance to head north over the weekend or New Years break.

Think snow

And so it begins.

What a great week weather wise. Beautiful sunny days and great snow conditions.

All riders in on Wednesday said that the trails were great. They have been groomed from Trudy's on Hwy 62 right up to Whitney. I'm not sure about the secondary trails. The groomer was out again last night because he turned around in the parking lot.

It is really cold now. Down to the minus 20's last night and not going above freezing for a long time. This will freeze the trails nicely. Rumor has it the lake is freezing over nicely so may be good for riding in the new year.

Not much more to say. No big events this week other thank "bicycle boy" Lake St. Peters only homeless person punching an unsuspecting customer in the head in an unprovoked attack at the general store and getting arrested. We'll see if he is back after his 72 hr evaluation.

Here's hoping that

Yes Virginia there is a sledding season.

YEEE HAWWW: The groomers have started grooming.

I would have updated yesterday but my satellite Internet (which by the way sucks) was not working because of the snow fall. But that was not a bad thing because on my way to town today I saw that they had groomed the trails this morning.

So we had a bunch of sledders in on Saturday and Sunday. Some of the Sunday people were already whining about the trails not being groomed. Come on people the snow just started on Wednesday. Get a grip. For heavens sake get a life!!!

Don't call and ask me how much snow has fallen so far because my answer will be enough.

The lot has been plowed Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. So if that isn't enough I don't know what is. Now I'm not saying it's as high as an elephant's eye but we do have lots of snow.

What a great day today was. Sunny, warm and snowy off and on. But it will get really cold later in the week or so I'm told by the local weather forecasters, better known as the local coffee boys.

If nothing changes later in the week I may not update. We will just see what happens.

Back soon.

First Snow Call Of The Season

On Monday I had my first phone call of the season asking if there was enough snow to go sledding. Sadly my answer was no. Had he called today my answer would be yes.

I guess it goes without saying that if it's snowing all over the province that we are getting dumped on also.

I had the lot plowed this morning at 10 am and was asked this afternoon if I would be getting the lot cleared any time soon.

It's snowed all day and if I thought it was quiet the last couple of weeks today was no exception.

Now as along as it dosn't rain, and I don't think it will, we will finally have a pretty good start to the winter.

I will update later in the week to let you know if the snow is staying or going.

Here's hoping for a white Christmas

Tis the season

Well I guess it's time I got back to updating this thing on a regular basis. I just keep forgetting. I get frustrated with our slow Internet service. Even though I am on satellite it's still not very quick. It may also be my computer that may or may not have come from Fred Flintstone when he was finished with it.

Brian would like me to let everyone know that he is now out of the BIFFY and helped straighten the sign that was sagging just a little this time. So he is not the slacker that I inferred last post.

By this time last year the trails had been groomed for two weeks. Not so this year. We have had snow off and on but the temperature has been so mild (but nice though) that it hasn't stayed. We did get snow twice this week. Once on Tuesday and again last night. It is snowing right now. The temp is colder now so this may stay. It also rained this week so that washed away everything except the big pile that my son-in-law piled up on the deck!

With Christmas creeping up so quickly I hope we get a big dumping that stays. It looks so much nicer ans I want the sledders back. Trail permits are selling well this year even with the unsure snow conditions. You can get them here at the diner if you haven't got one already.

As last year we will be closed December 24 & 25 but will open Boxing Day about 9 or 10.

We will also be opened New Years Day but not New Years Eve.

Nothing but gossip to report and most of that I have forgotten.

If I don't have any words of wisdom, snow to report or good gossip I may not be back until something exciting happens.

So have a great holiday season, Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. Thank you for all of your support over the year. It is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I can't believe it's over!!!

I'm not sure where June and July went but with the amount of food I ate Sunday it would appear that Ocotber is over because that must have been Thanksgiving Dinner.Thanksgiving weekend arrived so quickly, it's hard to believe that it is here and gone. We didn't even get the decorations up this year.

What a great weekend. Lots of people around. Lots of ATVer's which we haven't seen for awhile. The rail bed has been graded so it is much nicer to ride on. Two riders that live on Baptiste Lake said that it is the nicest it's been for a long time.

The bow hunt for moose seemed quite successful for a few that were by. Partridge are still scarce but we did have a nice feed of Partridge nuggets as an appitizer before the turkey. YMMM.

Mother nature is still the same old B**CH she has always been. It has snowed about 3 times in the last week. Nothing that stays too long but just enough to know what is lurking around the corner.

I was finally able to get my router replaced (it was less than 1 year old). So it is easier to use the internet now. We were the redneck internet cafe for a while. You had to plug your laptop directly into the modem which is behind the bar near the beer storage. So you used the beer cases for a desk and pulled up a chair. Most people were good about it. They would have a beer, glass of wine or a coffee while checking things out. It looked pretty funny

After the week from hell last weekend things are getting back to normal. The compressor in the walk in cooler blew during the ATV run last weekend. This caused pump issues which in turn caused the coffee maker, ice machine and hot chocolate machine to break down. Most items are up and running as good as new now. The sign is fixed after Helen the evening servier backed into it, but I still haven't replaced the half dozen wine glasses that she broke the same night.

Thanks to Jim, Wayne and the rest of the guys for fixing the sign on your way out. Brian M. good plan staying in the washroom until the repairs were over. No flies on you!!!

Well that's it for today. Trail permits are available if you want to buy them early. $200.00 before Dec 1, $220.00 after that. The extra money charged this year ($20.00) goes directly to the club the permit was purchased from not to the OFSC. So that is good.

It's pretty quite these days so if nothing much is happening I won't post. Frankly I have had enough excitement around here for awhile.

Cheers
Nancy

If you go out in the woods today ........

Here is a little sample of what is hanging around in the woods. Tomorrow is the first day of the Bear Hunt and this is a shot from my son-in-laws bear cam. He has a couple of big ones hanging around. He has also set up a bait for my daughter. She has three hanging around her spot.

Most of the hunters have arrived in the area and the big hunt will be on. I don't know if my daughter will have the heart to actually shoot or not but we will see soon enough. They are taking part of tomorrow off work to hunt. I will update if anything exciting happens.

Buddy is stealing the pail that dinner was in.

It is getting cold now. Some of the folks have closed up their cottages already and headed home. It makes you feel kind of sad. The long weekend just about here so I guess a bunch more will be heading out soon. The bugs have finally left also so i guess that is the good part. There have not been many ATVer's out lately. So I'm guessing that you will all head back once the little darlings are back to school.
I had a great trip to Maui and now it is back to reality. It sure would have been nice to take that trip in the cold weather but you've got to go when the goings good.
Well back to the grind. It's coming up dinner time. But being Monday I won't be to hectic.
I'll update after the weekend.

It can't be the long weekend all ready!!!

Well I've been scolded enough so it is time to update again. So Rob L "this blogs for you".

I can't believe that the summer is almost over and the long weekend is here. It seems that summer just started last week. Most people have stopped waiting for good weather to head north and are just coming anyway. I sure am glad I don't camp.

The good thing about the rain is that no one is complaining about the trails being dusty. The bad thing about the rain is that it happens every day. It is breeding a HUGE CROP OF MOSQUITOES. I've never seem them this bad. But there aren't very many dragon flies this year and they eat lots of mosquitoes.

If there is any breaking news or gossip I've missed it or can't remember it. The sun is finally out today and it is a great day. A perfect start to the long weekend.

The band will be in this weekend on Saturday and Sunday night with a licensed area outside for overflow and a reprieve for the smokers. It should be a good time if the weather holds. Mark and Greg Thompson of T N T will be playing. It's always a good time with them here.

Our fall Mud Run will be held on October 3rd. Hope you can come on out a join us. Same format as before. $30.00 entry gets you your ride, chance for cash and prizes and dinner.

We have started selling propane now with the tank exchange program. It's going well. Don't forget to get your ice and ice cream treats here too.

Well that's it for today.

Hope you can drop in if you are around this weekend.

Cheers

If it's daylight till 9:30 it must be June.

The longer days are great to see, but I'm getting tired of looking at them through the rain.

Just to let you know the black flies are happy now because the mosquitoes have also arrived so the have more company. I can hardly wait for the deer flies. Then the days will be complete.

On the upside the dragon flies are out now so the buffet is officially opened. Do your stuff guys, eat those bugs "til you can't eat no more". I want to see them all big and fat by the end of June.

It's still pretty quiet around the diner except for last Sunday when a group of 14 showed up for breakfast early and poor Pat B was on all by herself because the server wasn't in yet and neither was I. It was lucky that the other cook was in just having a coffee. She got roped in to helping out. But they both got a standing "O" from the crowd upon completion of their duties. It was a group of dirt bikers that had been camping out in the woods and riding for the weekend. They all lived in Toronto but were from Argentina. So for most of them there was a language problem. We will never know if they actually got what they ordered for breakfast but they went away happy and can't wait to come back again.

Here's hoping for some hot summer weather soon with lots of ATVer's, cottagers and tourists to enjoy it. The grey days are enough to drive me to drink and it's getting to be a short trip!!!

Have a great weekend and drop in if you are nearby. We are still doing the music on Saturday evenings from 6 to 9.

Cheers

Black Fly Report

Well it's hard to comment on the black flies. They don't come out so much in the rain. They just stay home and breed! So we should have a new crop by Tuesday or Wednesday.

It's been pretty crappy for the last couple of days but things are supposed to look up for the weekend. It will be nice to see the sun after a few days of rain and cold.

I have some very amusing ATV pictures of some diners from the long weekend among other things. The are safely stored in the computer and I don't know how to get them out and into the blog site. So sorry guys you don't get your 15 minutes of fame this month. One guy found an old life jacket on the trail and was wearing it. In view of all of the rain that weekend it was quite appropriate. The other group behind them were from Barrie and Bancroft and just wanted their pictures taken not to be left out.

Not too much has happened for a while (if you don't include the dump on fire). It's been pretty slow the last couple of weeks. So if some one wants to come up and do something crazy I would welcome the excitment.

The diner keeps me busy but it's just a little quiet.

We are still continuing with the music on Saturday nights from 6 - 9 now. It seems we can all stay up later when the days are longer.

Hope we see you soon.

Cheers

Long Weekend Happinings

What a cold and nasty long weekend. Nice to see lots of people back for the season. Lots left early and why not.

I have been asked to update for the next while with a black fly report. Well I was outside today with a contractor and I have a report.

They say "Send more ATVer's the last ones were delicious!!!!"

No kidding the bugs are hungry and plentiful. Unless you are out in the wind you're lunch.

This really hot weather will bring the little buggers out big time. So maybe if it keeps up it will kill them off too.

I went leek picking this week and got loads. A big batch of leek a potato soup has gone over really well this week at the diner. Now if you eat enough leeks the flies will stay away from you but then so will every one else.

Not much happening this weekend so the weather should be great.

I will update with the fly report for Rob from Peterborough.

That's it for now.
Cheers

The long weekend all ready?

Well for a quiet time of year the weeks are sure passing quickly.

With ATV Mud Runs three weeks in a row plus our annual paddle your fanny down the creek there always seems to be something going on.

I could barley walk after the High Country ATV run but it was fun. I would have been nicer if it hadn't rained at the end. Same thing with the diner run. Thanks to all that came out. We had a good day even though the turnout was small. But it was fun after all.

Our annual canoe trip down the Papeneau Creek this year was a great success. A record number of canoes this year and the rain had to spoil an otherwise great day. It is so nice to see so many young people hang out with all of us oldies and have a great day. This is the first year that I did not flip my canoe and it wouldn't have mattered. We were so wet from the rain who would have noticed. The water in the creek was warmer than the air so a flip would have warmed me up. It was kind of Jimmy B and Dwight to have a roaring fire at the last stop for us.

The long weekend is fast approching. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the familiar faces back for the first time this season. The flies are just starting to get hungry. They haven't been too bad up until now, but I can see them licking their lips through the window every time I look out.

We have a good music this weekend so if you are around on Saturday evening drop into the diner and stay for a while.

Nothing too serious to whine about this time. As long as the sun is shining it's all good.

Have a great long weekend.

Cheers
Nancy

Will it ever stop snowing????

It's hard to believe that it's going to be 25 on Saturday when it's snowing on Thursday. Enough all ready. This week if it's not snowing it's raining. Oh well it keeps the black flies away I guess.

It's pretty quiet around the old diner these days. I can't believe that April is almost over. The nice temps on the weekend may bring out some ATVer's. I hope to go on the High Country Mud Run this weekend. I have to be good though because I have to work on Saturday evening. No sweat I always behave as far as I can remember.

Other than some guy living under a canoe on the side of the rail bed there's not much new to report. Last week he upgraded his living quarters to a truck cap. There isn't a door on it but I suppose it's more shelter than the canoe.

Don't forget the diner mud run on May 2. It should be a fun day. Do you think I could get lucky enough for it to be 25 and sunny two weekends in a row. I think not.

For more information on the run or accommodations call us at 613-338-3043.

Have a great weekend and if you are in the area drop in. We still have entertainment on Saturdays from 5-8. We are old and can't stay up too late so we have to play early in the day.

Cheers

If It's Easter It Must Be Spring Soon

The good news is at least it didn't snow this weekend.

Even though it is freezing cold with the sun shining all day it is a great weekend.

It's nice to see some of the cottagers back. There were a few ATV's out this weekend, not nearly as many as I saw head up the highway on trailers.

The rail bed is drying up nicely. There is still a fair amount of snow in the bush but it is still rideable.

We got about 6-8 inches of snow last Monday and sure enough two brand new machines were seen unloading at Birds Creek for the last ride of the season. Go figure!!

The lake is still frozen but trying to thaw around the edges and creeks. If it would go above freezing for a few days that would be a start. Little green things are trying to peek out of the garden but they are not getting to far.

I'm even starting to look forward to the black flies!!! But wait until they are out for a day or two and then I'll start whining about them.

Well better days ahead. It should be about 85 by August.

Keep in mind about the ATV run on May 2nd. It should be a great ride. If you are coming and need more info or accommodation call the restaurant and we will get you some numbers. 613-338-3043

I hope you all had a nice long weekend.

Back soon with anything worth sharing.

Spring is here

Ode To Spring
Spring has sprung,
The grass has riz.
I wonder where
the birdies is?
Well the grass hasn't riz!! at all because it is still mostly snow covered. However the birds are currently cleaning up a winters worth of bird seed at the side of the building.
It's that crappy time of year when most of the snow is dirty or if it's melted there are puddles everywhere.
But better days ahead. The ATVer's have started coming out a little. Brian from Haliburton Lake road over Tuesday and said the trails were great. There was still lots of snow and it was quite frozen. That made the riding easier because it wasn't slushy yet.
Sleds were still running the ripples on Baptiste Lake last weekend. A huge crowd was there the weekend before watching the carry on. Lots of sleds didn't make it but no problem getting them out.
There are mud runs 3 weeks in a row starting April 25 at Highcountry Lodge, May 2 at the FABULOUS Porterville Diner, May 9 in Maynooth starting at the ANAF, a fund raiser for the Mud Dawgs September event.
Well that's it for today. Back next week.

Cheers

It's all over but the crying

Sledding's Done (Sung to the tune of taps)
Sledding's done.
Here's the sun,
O'er the lakes, o'er the hills, o'er the trails.
All is well
Packed away
Sledding's done :-(
The weather is so great it's hard to feel sad about the end of the snowmobile season. However if it rains today it will make it easier to be sad.
I few folks that I spoke to this week have packed the sleds away. I had one couple in yesterday but they thought that that would be their last ride.
I'm sure there is more snow in our future up here but it would probably be too late.
So onward and upward-Get those ATV's out!!!!!
Porterville ATV Mud Run is May 2.
I will update regularly for a little bit more just in case the mother lode of snow hits, then only about once per week just for my weekly whine about the latest crisis.
It's been fun and thanks for all of the positive feed back on the reports and sympathy for my plights.
If you only tune in for sledding have a great summer and I'll see you next winter.
Cheers

Oh what to say!!!!

Well Mother Nature didn't have the promised hot flash yesterday but she did have a hissy fit.

First it rained, then snow, then wind, then wind, then snow, then wind. Did I say wind? Then it just got darn cold.

Did we get much snow? NO!!! It all blew away. It is cold but really sunny today. A very nice day. There is now snow coming to speak of. Three guys parked a big trailer in the lot today and two more are up at the store. They will be back too late to get a first hand report but if it's good I'll update tomorrow.

The story is sledding is good in the bush but it's just getting there. The road crossings are bare. Most of the parking lot at the diner is down to the dirt. The temperature has been too cold for the snow to melt.

So it hard to say what to do. The sunny days are great. I love it. But more snow would be nice.

I guess the bottom line is if it won't cost you much to get here or you don't want to ride too far it would be worth the trip. Now having said that we sure would like to see you up here for some of the "northern hospitalty".

My day yesterday consisted of serving eight coffees, one BLT, one chicken fingers, one bowl of chili and three beers. Not bad for a 12 hour shift, glad I didn't have any staff in. So you can see why I would like company. It's getting lonely.

Have a great St. Paddy's weekend it you are taking part.

OPPS-Hold on the guys in the parking lot just came back. They headed for Haliburton through the Hydro line. Most of the trail was okay but some not so good. MLSS trails are groomed and good. Where the sun shines on the snow all day is a little bare but the rest is good. They came across two guys that had done 120 kms today and were not at their destination yet but were not unhappy.

Their opinion was for this late in the season things were not too bad. So there you go another definate maybe.

Cheers
Nancy

Oh no - Sleds and ATV's at the same time.

It's too early for selds and ATV's to be out at the same time. But that's what happened this weekend.

Kudos to all of the die hard riders that came out this weekend. I was truly suprised at how many riders there were out this weekend. Almost of the customers in were on sleds.

There was some snow last night which covered the trail nicely. The groomer went by this morning heading north. It was back fairly soon so I'm guessing it just went up to the Mckenzie Lake turn and came back.

It is to be mild Tuesday and really warm on Wednesday then back into a deep freeze for the next while. Mother Nature is one nasty old bag some days. It should just be winter and then spring! None of this teasing with nice weather screwing everything up for sledding then bang-freeze your ass off again just because you put on a spring coat.

The trails were a little rutty (is that a word) from the ATVs but if the groomer heads to Bancroft it should fix that. The road crossings were looking better today but if it gets up to +10 on Wednesday who knows.

So I don't have any great news to report weather wise or otherwise. I'll just wait to see what the next couple of days brings. I'll update again on Wednesday after Mother Nature has her hot flash.

Oh by the way Jim S, JR (the hottie) and the family were in on the weekend wondering where you and the gang were. So it's not just him that can't get away all the time.

What a sport JR and his son are. Each has a broken wrist and they are going skiing this week and coming up here sledding next week. Maybe it is just youthful foolishness!!! Have fun guys.

Back Wednesday

I can't stall any longer

I waited as long as I could for something positive to happen but I can't wait any longer.

It was trying to snow today but it didn't amount to anything. It is still grey and overcast so who knows, surly not the weather people.

I haven't seen a groomer out all week so I'm not sure what is happening on that front. The trails are still icy and the roads are bare. Getting to the trails can be tricky if you have far to travel.

There have been riders in every day and no one is complaining about conditions. Two guys in Tuesday rode over to Pembroke for the day and on Wednesday they road to Petewawa and back. Both days they had good trips.

The temperature is still hanging below zero and getting quite cold at night so we are not losing any snow we just aren't getting any new.

So that is about all there is weather and snow condition wise.

Steve Eric and your brother say thanks for letting them use your house while you are away working and they are up here sledding.

Eric also wants me to ask the Bloody Caesar drinkers why more of you don't try the Diner Style Caesar--the one with the dollop of horseradish and nippy garnish. I think he just likes to say dollop. He thinks it's the best and was quite surprised when I told him that it wasn't that popular that regular caesars were way more popular.

So there it is Eric. I will see if your request increases the sales of Diner Style Caesars.

I will update tomorrow.

Weekend Wrap Up

It wasn't too busy around town this weekend. Conditions aren't too bad all things considered.

It is still stinking cold and not going to warm up until who knows when.

No new snow is expected until Friday. It is to be sunny and cold all week so conditions will remain the same.

I don't know about grooming but if I find anything out I will update. If I haven't spread any cheer by Wednesday it's because nothing has broken, fallen apart, hit the fan or changed outside in any way.

Let's hope for weekend snow.
Cheers

Update the Friday update

The rain stopped the snow started the snow stopped. That is about it. Except that it is freezing cold outside.

I just spoke to 8 riders that came from Spectacle Lake Lodge via Barry's Bay and Combermere. They said that the trail was fine. Not bad considering what this morning brought. Some parts of the trail are great some are icy. They felt that after a bunch of sleds traveled over the trail it would be fine again.

So I guess if your plan is to come up and ride a zillion miles at break neck speed this might not be the weekend to do it. If you are coming up just to have a tour and take advantage of a great weekend then come on up.

Hope this helps, I know it sounds like a definite maybe.

If you are in the neighborhood drop in.

See you soon.

Friday File

Well things have gone for a slide in old Hooterville. It started to rain during the night. It has pretty much stopped now but its' pretty dreary.

Even the dog wouldn't go out at 6:30 this morning, so I threw in another load of laundry and we both went back to bed for a while. It didn't look any better at 8:00 either.

It is quite mild now, about plus 4. According to reliable sources the temp will drop this afternoon and it is to start snowing. It's quite windy and that won't change. By tonight it will be -25 so things will freeze up again and the new snow will help.

There was a little snow on Thursday so that was a good thing. Riders in on Thursday said that the trails were in great shape so if it gets cold this afternoon they should stay okay.

If you need information later on this afternoon or tomorrow morning just call the resturant and we will let you know if things have changed. 613-338-3043

I may update this evening if I get a chance and things change.

Back soon

Another super day up north.

Tuesday and today have to be the best days that we have had all year. The temperature is about -5 and the sun is so warm it's like tee shirt weather. It just makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over.

If you were riding today it would be fantastic.

The groomers were out yesterday and the trails are great. The road crossings are bare and the side roads are pretty clear also. Some snow is expected tomorrow and a little rain on Friday but it dosn't seem like enough to screw things up too badly.

The weekend is to be cold and nice but that is a lifetime away in weatherman years.

The crisis at the diner have been kept to a minimum this week. The only major glitch in the system is the coffee maker taking on a life of is own and running water when ever it felt like it. Like all night and day. It was a little damp in here on Tuesday morning and it kept us on our toes trying to keep up with it. Fortunatley I was able to have it fixed this morning so I don't have to turn the water off at night anymore. All other disasters this week were just minor so we are still smiling. But that may just be a trick or really good drugs.

I will update later in the week to let you know which direction the weather is taking. Oh how does Dave Duvall do it every day for all those years!!!

Chat later

Weekend Wrap Up

Please excuse me for not updating on Friday or over the weekend but I was having technical difficulties with the internet service. Now I could blame it on the satellite service or something else but that would just be wrong.

What is the first rule of electronic problem? Check to see if it's plugged in for crying out loud!!!!! When the very helpful man from Hughesnet asked me to look at the back of the modem to see how many lights were on I was quite surprised to see that there were none. JAMIE WHY DIDN'T YOU THINK OF THAT WHEN YOU TRYING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. Well it wasn't the wall plug. It was the plug coming from the box on the plug not plugged into the other plug for the wall. This must be something invented by a man because no woman would ever invent such a silly way to plug one thing into the wall!!!

So all is well now and update I will.

The snow conditions were as good as the weather was on the weekend. There were lots of riders out and other than a few breakdowns I didn't hear of any mishaps. Thanks to all the folks that dropped in for a meal or a drink over the weekend. Everyone is so patient when we are busy. The girls and I really appreciate it.

The Snow Skimmers poker run was a great success. Lots of good prizes and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

We had more snow on Sunday and overnight. It is to be nice for two or three days and then start snowing again on Thursday. That will make it good for next weekend.

The groomers were out on Sunday night.

I will update again on Wednesday. And just so the boys from Pensylvania don't feel that I have forgotten you I will update again later in the week so you know what to expect when you get here next weekend.

Till then

Gearing up for the weekend.

We finally did get the snow that we were promised. More will be coming today and tomorrow.

It kind of reminded me of a politician. They spew volumes of double talk and by the end of the day they really haven't said much.

That was how yesterday's snow was. It snowed off and on all day and by this morning there was only about 6-10 cms of snow. Enough fell to cover the trails well. Riders in for breakfast this morning said that the trails were like a table top but the lakes are still a a bit icy and care should be taken.

The groomers were out. In fact I even passed one coming down from McKenzie Lake this morning on my way to work at 8:00.

Here's a shout out to Scott and Wayne from Burlington. Jamie and the guys were in this morning and they were laughing at you two for not coming up on Wednesday for the best day of riding that they have had this year. They mentioned something about you being weenies!

This will be a great weekend to load up and ride all weekend.

Stop by if you are in the neighborhood.

Cheers

There's Good News

IT'S SNOWING!!!!!!!!

The Wednesday Report

I was waiting until this morning to update so that I could tell you that a load of snow landed in last night, but alas it did not.

Now my sinus problem is really bad this morning and that can only be on of two things, either it is going to snow or I had too much wine last night. Oh ya I did have wine last night!

They are calling for snow this morning and again tonight so I will report back tomorrow about mid day if it does.

The trails are still well covered. There were a number of riders in on Tuesday and no one was complying about the conditions.

The groomer did go out on Monday but I don't know where. I'm sure if we get snow tonight they will groom on Thursday and Friday.

Don't forget the Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers poker run this weekend. Registration starts at 8:00 at the community centre in Lake St. Peter, the fire hall at North Baptiste Lake Rd, and Papineau Lake Road. It is a good day with lots of prizes. I think the best one is the gift certificate from the Porterville Diner but then I have been wrong before once or twice.

To Jim and Brian: Have a good time sledding through the wilds of Northern Ontario. See you in a couple of weeks. I'm sure Connie will have a very relaxing time with the both of you gone for a week.

Not too rush the season (because I need about 8 more weeks of snowmobilers) but the spring ATV mud run will be May 2. Same format as the others.

That's it for now.

Cheers

Update the Friday update.

I finally had my first sledders in.

Russ rode down from McKenzie Lake and said that the trail was great and he is expecting a large group up this weekend, so if it wasn't good he would not have been as happy.

Then three young lads rode up from Baptiste Lake. They were on their way to Pembroke for the weekend. They also said that the ride up had been good.

So there you go. That's all I know for sure.

Cheers
Nancy

Friday Update

Not too much has changed overnight. The temperature has dropped considerably -20 when I got in at 8:00 this morning. There was not any new snow overnight.

For the last few days the trails have been marked as closed. This was to keep people off while they were so slushy. They should be marked as open by today because of the drop in temperature. Everything really froze up overnight. Even the lakes look better.

No groomers were out last night so they should be out tonight.

It's hard to say what to advise. The weekend is to be sunny and seasonably cold. Nothing to shocking temperature wise. Cold enough to keep conditions the same. Not much new snow is a little disappointing as it is to be a beautiful sunny weekend.

So it really is a crap shoot deciding to come up or not. The trails are definitely usable but the side roads are all down to the dirt. So I guess it depends where you are staying or how far you have to travel to get here.

If we were still just cottaging here we would be up for the weekend because there is always drinking, playing cards and eating too much if you don't feel like sledding.

So there you go a definite maybe.

Hope we see you this weekend.
Cheers

Weather Update

Yesterday and this morning's rain made a mess of things.

It has stopped raining now and started snowing about noon. It looks like it may snow for a while.

It is getting cold again. The lakes had slush and puddles this morning but if this cold stays they should be frozen by morning.

The trails were still well snow covered but the side roads were all bare by this morning. Again if the snow continues they should be better by morning.

Things are definitely looking better now than they were this morning.

As luck would have it I am having a GST and Payroll Audit tomorrow morning. Yea!! I'll try to post first thing in the morning before the little beauty arrives with her calculator. I wonder if it being Friday the 13th is a good omen or bad. Hmmmm

I haven't heard any news of grooming. I will try to find out by the morning what is happening.

Well let's all think snowy thoughts overnight and hope for the best.

Back tomorrow.

Wednsday's Woes

Well I waited until late in the day in case there was good news to report. But alas it has started to rain.

After all the hoopla yesterday we only had freezing rain for about 30-40 minutes in the morning and the rest of the day was fine. About -5 all day. It has been fairly mild all day today. I guess the only good part is that there are no sleds on the trail to mess them up.

It is supposed to rain a bit tomorrow and then snow. The weekend looks to be really nice weather wise but we will have to wait to see how much damage is done overnight.

We are just very lucky that there is such a good base. I will look at the lake tomorrow before I leave for work to see if water wings should be worn when crossing the lake.

I will post tomorrow but probably not first thing in the morning. If I wait until noonish there might be better news.

Sadly that's all there is today.

Sorry for the laps in updates. I had to leave town on Wednesday for grandmother duty. Grandson #3 came home last week and I was voluntold that I needed to help for a few days. I got back on Friday and there was not much change then the weekend hit>

It was a little drizzly, misty on Saturday but it didn't so any damage. If anything it packed the trails better. Saturday was very busy so the trails were well used. Sunday was a fabulous day for sledding. Sunny and mild just the right temperature.

When I grow up I want to be an OPP on a sled. They get to show up for work at 1:00 (they arrived and asked to park in the driveway) ride til about 2:30 come in for coffee and soup, head out again until about 3:30 then load up and quit for the day because no one was around. DO YOU THINK!

It was Sunday afternoon for Pete's sake. Who did you think would be out, most people have to go home because they have a real job!!

However they were very nice and business is business after all.

All four groomers were out on Sunday night so everything is groomed up nicely. I'm told we may get some rain this week. Well I won't have it! I am insisting on another day just as nice as today is. Sunny and mild, just perfect.

I will update tomorrow if things take a turn for the worst.

We will be open on Monday, Feb 16, Family Day from 7 am to 7 pm just in case you are in the area.

Don't forget the Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers annual Poker Run on Saturday, Feb 21. Lots of good prizes and a nice little ride.

That's it for now.

I don't care what the groung hog said!

I don't care what the ground hog saw, I want six more weeks of winter at least.

What a wild weekend we had. Great conditions, great weather, great people. It was really busy all weekend. There were such large groups. Most of the winter it has been only small groups of 2-4 at a time. Last weekend it was 8-12 at a time. It was neat.

Now it's time for my touching story. On Saturday when the cook came in at 6:30 she found the building to be quite cold but never thought anything of it. However when the grill would not heat up she knew that something was wrong. Yes we ran out of Propane. I guess the computer system that tells how many cold days there are so that fill ups can be monitored had gone south for the winter. After four calls for an emergency fill (with no reply) I finally had to call the competition. Thankfully he is my neighbour. After half a dozen more calls we finally got the Kelly's guy to call back. One hour and $1,000.00 later we had propane. So were good to go right? I don't think so. About 4:00 the well ran dry and we were out of water. Of course before you check the water level in the well you must get out 15 tools and check everything that it isn't first. Fortunately mother nature stepped in and hour or so later the well had filled up enough that we were back on track again. Good thing because we were almost out of clean dishes and glasses. Then just when you think it's all good-the toilet broke. It's a good thing that people around here keep all kinds of replacement parts on hand, because at 8:00 pm it's pretty hard to find a store open. That was just about enough drama for one day.

We had a good crowd in on Saturday night. The band even played more than an hour longer. All and all it was a great day.

Back to the real reason we are here. The groomers have been out every day. Riders in on Monday were all saying that the trails are in excellent condition. The snow on the lakes is really deep so if you are not following in tracks it's a tough go. It has snowed a little each day but not heaps. The road crossings are looking a little brown and slushy but the trails are well covered.

Here's a shout out to the ladies from Harcourt Park. Get the kids off to school and ride on over for lunch.

Well that's all the news that's fit to print. See you on the weekend if not before.

Remember to keep the rubber side down.

Cheers

It's Friday again.

It looks like another great weekend is coming up.

It has been snowing a little every day with no end in sight for a while. The trails are all groomed and ready for the weekend. With the fresh snow riding is wonderful.

Not too many around this week. But if you got a chance to get out it was great.

The temperature is warmer now not like last weekend when it was sooooo cold. It's warm enough to be comfortable but cool enough so the the sleds will still run fine.

I hope you can get away for a ride this weekend.

Cheers

Snow news is good news

It looks like it's snowing everywhere with a vengeance. What a great day here. Mild temperatures, lightly snowing and great trails. It is neat to see the kids in today that had a snow day and also the ones that had finished their exams and got a bonus ride.

The snow today will be a nice addition to what we have and will make grooming even better.

Please remember when you are riding if you stop keep to the right of the trail. Should people still have to be reminded about this!

Steve from Bancroft was riding Saturday and came up over a knoll with six people behind him, and there on the trail were three sleds, three abreast having a great chat like they were the only ones out that day. He had to do some pretty fancy footwork to avoid a collision. When they realised what bone heads they were they took off pretty quickly. Probably a good thing. He was pretty wound up when he arrived at the diner still thinking of what the outcome could have been.

Well Steve I hope that you are going to Mexico with Blair and Rob etc for the wedding and then all will be better when you get back. Have a tequila popper for me.

Hope you get out for a great ride this weekend.

Monday night and all's well

Kudos to all the brave souls that headed out into the cold this weekend for a ride. It was so sunny it was hard to believe that it was that cold. But it looked like a great day for a ride.

Boy did we go through the soup!

Well I asked for some excitment and I did get it. I had a grandson born a week early this weekend. Baby Jack Capstick came in at 7 lbs 12 oz on Saturday so a quick trip to Oshawa was in order Sunday.

Another nice day today for riding. Bill B rode up to Whitney on freshly groomed trails and only met two sleds on the way back. It was pretty quiet.

Madawaska was also done today, but no info on any other. The snow keeps coming in little amounts keeping the trails and road crossings freshly covered.

It is warming up a little so there will probably be more snow soon. It's nice to see the days getting a little longer.

I'll be back with more news on Wednesday unless something really exciting happens.

Cheers
Nancy

Friday, January 23, 2009

Is it Friday already?

I can't believe that it's Friday so soon. It was pretty quiet up here this week. There weren't many people around but I don't know where the week went. What with the water pump at home dying and the washer trying to follow, an electrical problem at the diner it just skipped by.

The trails are in great shape. Riders in today came from Minden, Apsley, Barry's Bay and all the trails were nicely groomed.

The lakes are good but slushy in places. They are being used regularly. We have had a lot of people in this week on over night trips.

They're aren't many people out after 4:00 any more. Mostly daytime riders.

Here's hoping that it doesn't get too cold this weekend because the riding is excellent.

Have a great weekend.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

It's Wednesday and all's well.

What a great day for sledding yesterday. It was sunny, cold and all trails are in great shape.

There were a lot more people around yesterday than Monday taking advantage of the great conditions.

It is snowing today and will be again Thursday and Friday making the trails even better. The road crossings are much better now that there has been some snow almost every day.

Grooming is still being done every day at least on some trails. It should be well groomed for the weekend.

Other than my forgetting it was my turn to open up again this morning things are pretty quiet. There hasn't been any new gossip or exciting happenings for a while. It seems that even the OPP have moved on to parts unknown. It must be because there is more snow down south so they don't have to come this far.

Come on people lets create some excitement this weekend. I need something to write about!!
I hope you can make it up for what should be a great weekend of sledding this weekend.

See you soon
Cheers

Weekend Wrap Up

It was a great weekend for sledding. The trails are in good shape and the lakes are good.

It's snowing again. But I understand that is happening every where from the sounds of it.

The groomers were out all Sunday night and back out again today. All the trails will be groomed by the end of the day.

Riders in today were thrilled most of them were the first ones on the trail after grooming.

Imagine riding all the way from Chandos Lake and being the first on the trail the whole way. A couple in this morning had that treat as did two ladies from Harcourt Park.

Monday riding is the best.

Lake St. Peter is going to be staked this week. I don't know about Baptiste but they are riding it.

Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers annual Poker Run will be held this year on February 21.

Come out and support the club if you can. It is the only fundraiser they do and its a good day.

That's it for now.

Back Wednesday.
Cheers

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Saturday is here already.

The weather has smartened up. It is now a reasonable temperature outside.

It's snowing a little now that it is warmer. Grooming is still happening every day. The trials are all good as are the lakes. The lakes are not staked yet but it will probably happen next week.

That's all the news thats worth reporting.

Hope we see you this weekend

Hell may have frozen over!!!

IT'S

FREEZING

COLD

UP HERE!!!!

If no one comes out to play today or tomorrow I will understand.

It's stinking cold. My water was frozen because the heaters under the house both died at the same time. I was told to stop and pick up a new one. "The biggest one they had" were my instructions. So I did. Unfortunately the one I bought had a plug for 220 volt. Screwed again. So don't send me to the store for boy stuff any more. Go yourself and it will be right the first time.

Here's hoping that it warms up for the weekend. The sun is shining and other than the cold it's a great day here. The groomer went over Martins Mill way yesterday and there was hardly a track on it by noon today.

The lakes will safe for sure now.

Hope you can get out for a ride this weekend.

Cheers
Nancy

It's Tuesday and all's well

Life is good. I finally got my car back after a week. And I didn't even get a bill with it. I'm sure that will arrive today. Life isn't that good!!!

It's snowing again. We had a bit overnight and it started again this morning. It will probably snow for most of the day and again tomorrow.

The trails are in good shape. No word on where they groomed last night and everybody in yesterday was pleased with the conditions.

So there it is. Snow, snow, snow=sledding.

Harry from Port Perry. Your friends were in yesterday and wanted me to tell you that they were having a great time. Sorry you couldn't be here with them. They wanted me to ask if there was a new lady in your life and she wouldn't let you come out to play or if you really did have to work. Do tell.

See you on the weekend.

Weekend Wrap Up

What a great weekend. Tons of sledders braved the cold days for a great ride.

The trails were great all around. Even in Paudash I'm told.

The groomers were out last night. The rail bed had not been ridden on when I came to work this morning.

I have been told that they are riding Lake St. Peter, Baptiste, Papineau, and Mink. Now I haven't seen the guys that headed out over Mink yet but I guess no news is good news. It's always a little tricky on Mink Lake.

Snow is expected today and tomorrow then dropping into a deep freeze. Let's hope it warms up for the weekend. I can only make so much soup.

I'm nearly on bended knee hoping to get my car back today or at least this month. Hope springs eternal.

Have a great week. Or if you have days off maybe we'll see you sooner.

Cheers
Nancy

Friday Update

Here is the update for the weekend---

All trails are groomed and all trees removed-according to the club pres (So it must be true)

No new snow--We have enough for now.

No new gossip.--Not too many people around.

No new personal crisis.- Except I haven't got my car back yet it needed another part (There's a surprise)

Here's a shout out to "Harry from Port Parry". We haven't seen you yet this year and the girls were asking about you. Get that new Yamaha out and go sledding!!

Have a great weekend and drop in if you are in the neighbourhood.

Cheers
Nancy

Are you still shoveling?

It has stopped snowing for a while. It looks like it will start again any time but at least it is giving the plow guys a chance to clean out the driveways.

Being the sport I am I walked into work again today (the car should be ready today). It was a little harder coming down the tracks today because the snow was deeper. But in keeping with my extremely good luck I met the groomer heading north just as I was about to cross the road at the restaurant. He couldn't have come along 15 minutes earlier. OH NO.

The groups that were in yesterday said that the trails were in good shape. One group had come up from south of the Boulter area. The group from Bancroft said that the trail to town had just been groomed and was in great shape.

So that is all that's new in the sledding department. If nothing changes overnight I may not post on Friday. There would be nothing new to add and my witty banter may be getting on your nerves.

Hope we see you this weekend.
Cheers

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

It sounds like 6 cms of snow hit Toronto. BT had to broadcast 1/2 earlier today to show everyone how to get to work. Isn't this a little over reacting?

6 cms of snow isn't enough to make me put my boots on yet.

But snowing it is.

Although the first few days of 2009 were busy they were quite uneventful in a good way. Things did change yesterday. On my way home from Bancroft yesterday my VERY reliable little Toyota Rav 4 quit on the highway. I was just barely made it to Maynooth.

So what does any red blooded Canadian girl do when her car breaks down. Call CAA for a tow back to town, head to the general store in Maynooth, get Carla pick up another friend and head out on a road trip to Barry's Bay for lunch. Getting home home in time for dinner worked out well. Waking up this morning about 7:00 I realized that I open the restaurant one day a week. It is not usually Thursday or Friday, and I didn't do it Monday or Tuesday, soooooo it must be today. When I called the restaurant to see if it was opened I didn't answer the phone. OOPS Thankfully Charlie jumped in his truck and came over to put on coffee for the coffee boys. We usually get here about 6:30 to open for 7:00 but alas not today. Of course, not having my car I then had to get my daily exercise by walking to work. The dog loved it and I have first hand knowledge that the rail bed is in great shape.

I think that I need an attendant or maybe a co-op student. I'm pretty sure that the village called yesterday and they were looking for their idiot! It may have been me.

Well that's my touching story now on to the real stuff.

We have had enough snow over the last two days to cover the trails nicely. It is snowing again today and it looks like we may get a fair dumping. The roads are all plowed but snow covered so this is making the road crossings a lot better than they were over the weekend.

The groomers started out again on Monday and did to Whitney, Madawaska and Martins Mill. I don't know where they went Tuesday but they were out again.

A few have crossed Lake St. Peter and Baptiste Lake I'm hearing both good and bad so by the end of the week I will have more news on that. Neither lake is staked yet so you would have to look for tracks before you make your decision.

It looks like we are getting back to the same point in snow that we were before Christmas.

I will get back again tomorrow with an update after today's activities.

Cheers
Nancy

Back to Reality

Well I guess most folks have headed home and back to the real world.

You no sooner left the north country and it started to snow. Just a few inches today but we are to get snow for the next three days.

I was told that a groomer even went out today. Go figure. I don't know where it went but its good to know that they are heading out again.

When I hear more I'll spread the joy.

Not much has changed since last week. It was nice to see the Pensylvania group back again for another sledding season. Now I know who it was checking the blog from there.

Now I haven't had a good rant for a while so here goes.

All bankers must live in happyland where the sun is a different colour and rainbows shine every day.

My banking person called recently to tell me that I am putting too much cash in the bank. In that case why do I get overdrawn. I should be doing more electronic banking it would seem, VISA, Master Card and debit. She suggested that I offer cash back to all customers. Well if you wanted cash back I'm sure you would ask. Apparently depositing cash is risky. For who I asked, only me if I get hit on the head going to the bank. Your a bank for crying out loud how can cash be risky. The bottom line is that cash is labour intensive and they would rather not have to pay the tellers to deal with it.

She also suggested that I pay more of my suppliers in cash doing payouts from the till. They have probably had the same speech as me so I don't know how that would work.

Well today I took my spittey self to the bank with my cash deposit and wad of money doing a payout from the till to pay my VISA bill in cash. They will dam well count my money one way or the other! I'm sure this will come back to bite me because whenever you deal with a bank the only thing to say is BOHICA!!!!!

B bend
O over
H here
I it
C comes
A again

I feel better now, so I should get back to work. It's not busy today but there is always stuff to do.

Here's hoping that you can make it up on the weekend when the trails should be in great shape. I'll update again Wednesday as I will be out most of Tuesday.

Cheers

Sorry to take so long

I didn't mean to go three days without posting but it has been so busy around here that I just haven't had time.

The trails are all in good shape according to riders in so far. Most of the trees are off the trails. There have been a few great bunches of sledders that have take three days of their time and just sledded around with chain saws to get the trails cleared.

We had some more snow last night 3-4 inches.

I don't know about grooming yet. When I hear something I'll let you know.

Riders have come from Coe Hill, Madoc, Wilberforce, Haliburton just to name a few. There have been a few that just trailered up for the day.

By the number of sleds in here and just passing by things must be in pretty good shape or there would be more complaning going on.

As soon as I hear something I will post again.
